Blockhouses like these at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake would have housed Richard Pierpoint and his fellow Coloured Corps militiamen during the War of 1812.

Also streaming into Fort George were Native allies. There were the Mohawk Loyalists. Some of them, like Pierpoint, were veterans of the War of American Independence. Others were their descendants. Three of Joseph Brant’s sons, Joseph, John, and Jacob, were prominent Mohawk war chiefs. Many of the new British Canadian recruits had likely seen First Nations people before, but never in such high numbers and decked out in full battle regalia and war paint.

Also there were the Shawnee warriors led by their legendary chief Tecumseh. The Shawnee had traditionally lived south of Upper Canada in Ohio Territory west of the Thirteen Colonies. Even before the American War of Independence, British Americans had constantly tried to seize land from the Shawnee because almost all of the desirable territory in the original Thirteen Colonies along the Atlantic coast had already been settled and the American colonists wanted to move west. The Shawnee were related to the Wyandots and were traditional enemies of the Iroquois, who were allies of the British, but in 1812 they fought on the same side.
